I love to play at Church!
I grew up on the old Hymns. We could practically march to them the way we sang them in our little country Methodist church in Killduff, Iowa (shown in photo above). Old Rugged Cross, Onward Christian Soldiers, Jesus Loves Me, He Lives, Amazing Grace…
In my Catholic church in Plattsmouth, I got to play all the service music and also songs like, Join in the Dance, Eagles Wings, One Bread - One Body, etc.
Now I do the same at North American Martyrs in Lincoln, Nebraska.
But I love Baroque trumpet and organ a la Handel, Haydn, Corelli, Torelli, Leopold Mozart, Jeremiah Clarke and Henry Purcell, too.
Any chance I get, I also like to play virtuoso Gospel in the style of Grammy Award winner, Phil Driscoll. If you have never heard of him, you can click on the links below to hear some samples of his music.
I have full orchestral accompaniment disks for some of these selections, but always prefer to perform with a “live” accompanist.
Here is a nice referral from an excellent church musician.
“I have known and worked with John Kool on many occasions and have great respect for his musicality, both as a performer and as a teacher.
He is an excellent church musician, with an innate sense of musical style. He is also very flexible, with the ability to transpose, improvise, and collaborate with other musicians.
John has served as trumpet teacher to one of our foreign exchange students, and we were pleased with the excellent instruction Henning received.
I heartily recommend John to anyone looking for a trumpet teacher or a performer for any occasion.”
